If ever there was an example of a self-made player, Mike Lowell is it. He has added ingredients from each of the recent homegrown talents to his arsenal, helping him jump up the prospect charts.
There was little fanfare when the San Juan native was drafted out of Florida International in the 20th round of the '95 draft. Yet, much like Pettitte's performance on the mound, Lowell has continued to play well above expectations in progressing four levels in the past two seasons. A second baseman in college, Lowell has made a smooth transition to third to accommodate his 6-4, 195- pound frame. Although his range and agility still needs to improve, the 24-year-old's glovework and positioning have improved each year.
Like Jeter, Lowell has an impeccable work ethic and embarked on an off-season workout regimen that jumped his homer totals from eight in '96 to a combined 30 in '97 for Norwich and Columbus.
Even more impressively, his power increased while Lowell walked more than he whiffed. A .344 average in Norwich led to a promotion to Columbus, where the slugger knocked another 15 homers.
Don't be surprised to see Lowell make his debut in New York at some time in '98.
